The New York City Creative Aging Libraries Project 2011-2012

Librarians and Professional Teaching Artists Collaborate to
Improve the Quality of Life for Older Adults Through Instructional Arts Programs

Lifetime Arts, Inc. expanded its innovative program, Creative Aging in Our Communities: the New York Libraries Project to libraries in Manhattan, Staten Island, the Bronx and Brooklyn. In partnership with The New York Public Library (NYPL), and the Brooklyn Public Library (BPL), and with funding from The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation, and additional funding from the Laura Jane Musser Fund, the program is serving over 500 older adults through hands-on instructional programs. Working with professional teaching artists, libraries have been implementing workshop series that actively engage older adults in learning and building skills in a variety of art forms. The free programs promote creativity and provide opportunities for meaningful social engagement. In each library, the workshops conclude with a public culminating exhibition, reading, or performance. This unique program provides funding, access to great teaching artists and on-going technical assistance for public libraries, building their capacity to deliver programs for their older adult patrons. This expansion is based on the successful 2010 NYPL pilot.
